WINDOW TINT CARE

Good window tint maintenance starts with patience after installation and gentle cleaning once the film has cured. Here is how to care for your tinted car windows, from the first day to your regular wash routine.

Aftercare Timing for San Diego Best Tint Installations

  • First 24 hours: Keep the windows fully closed. Do not roll them down.
  • Up to 72 hours: Allow the film to cure completely before cleaning the tinted interior glass.
  • After curing: Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner, such as SprayWay, or mild soap and water with a fresh, clean microfiber cloth.

Curing instructions vary by film and installation. These are San Diego Best Tint’s recommended aftercare times. Follow any additional instructions we give you for your specific installation.

The First 24 Hours: Keep Your Windows Up

Leave newly tinted windows closed for 24 hours after installation. Opening them too soon can disturb the film while its adhesive is setting, especially along the top edge. Remind anyone else driving the car before they use a drive-through or parking kiosk.

Avoid touching the inside of the tinted glass during this period. If you accidentally lower a window, close it gently and contact us if you notice a lifted edge or a change in the film.

Allow Up to 72 Hours for Complete Curing

At San Diego Best Tint, we recommend allowing up to 72 hours for complete curing. Being able to lower your windows after the first 24 hours does not mean it is time to clean or rub the film.

Temporary haze and moisture marks can appear as film dries. Leaving the surface undisturbed protects it from scratches or creases. If the appearance has not cleared after the recommended curing period, send us a photo so we can advise you.

How to Clean Tinted Car Windows

Once the film has cured, keep cleaning simple:

  1. Check the cleaner. Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner, such as SprayWay, or simply mild soap and water. Check the product label to confirm it is safe for window film.
  2. Use a fresh, clean microfiber cloth. A cloth used on wheels or bodywork may carry grit that scratches the film.
  3. Apply cleaner to the cloth. Lightly dampen it rather than soaking the window or its edges.
  4. Wipe gently. Work with light pressure, then use a second clean microfiber cloth to finish.

For stubborn spots, we can recommend a film-safe cleaning method. Ask us before using a solvent, adhesive remover, or unfamiliar detailing product on the film.

What to Avoid

  • Ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads, and polishing compounds on the film.
  • Razor blades or scrapers on the tinted interior surface.
  • Picking at edges or placing adhesive stickers and accessories directly on the film.
  • Dragging seat-belt hardware, tools, or other hard objects against the glass.

A scratch-resistant coating does not make window film scratch-proof. Gentle cleaning and careful handling help protect its surface.

Can You Wash Your Car After Window Tinting?

Automotive window film is installed on the inside of the glass, so an exterior wash is different from cleaning the tinted surface. Keep the windows closed during the first 24 hours and leave the interior glass untouched until curing is complete.

If someone else washes or details your car, tell them when the tint was installed and ask them to skip the inside windows during the curing period.

When Should You Contact Your Installer?

Get in touch if an edge lifts, you see peeling, or a mark remains after the curing period. Let us know which window is affected and send a clear photo so we can assess the issue.

Our automotive films carry a lifetime warranty against peeling, bubbling, or fading. Contact San Diego Best Tint for help with a concern before attempting a repair or removing the film yourself. See what affects window tint lifespan for the difference between normal aging and warranty coverage.

Window Tint Maintenance FAQs

How long should I wait to roll down my windows?

Keep your windows up for 24 hours after an installation by San Diego Best Tint. Allow up to 72 hours for complete curing before cleaning the interior tinted glass.

Can I use regular glass cleaner on tinted windows?

Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner, such as SprayWay, or mild soap and water with a fresh, clean microfiber cloth. Avoid ammonia-based or abrasive cleaners, and wait until the film has cured.

Should I push out bubbles in new window tint?

It is best to let the film dry undisturbed; pressing or puncturing it can damage the surface. Contact us if bubbles or moisture marks have not cleared after the recommended curing period, or if you notice a lifting edge.

Does ceramic tint need different cleaning?

Carbon and ceramic films generally need the same gentle approach: allow curing, choose a film-safe cleaner, and avoid abrasive tools. Follow any product-specific instructions from your installer.
